E11 2009 Theme Ideas so far...keep them coming.
Saturday, 24 January 2009

Please keep your ideas coming...we will vote the week of Feb1-8. Send them to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Here is what we have received so far.

A.
In the spirit of the main event evolution, and our new president, seems like a theme of "Transformation" might fit, Letting the past go of 8 years of the trickle down economics lie, to a new transformation of possibility, beyond our past. A blank slate to create a new world and life without the constraints the past as put on all of us. We burn the last 8 years and the bush's, to allow for freedom and new hope. Just like Burningman is about letting our past go, and allowing the freedom that comes in creating possibility once we are free of our history.

B.
A little more info on the "Mythos" Theme idea:

As evolution is about our biological history, tied together by strands of DNA, "Mythos" is the story of cultural evolution-- the common themes and archetypes that bind us together through our stories of creation, compassion, pride, arrogance, selflessness, wisdom and folly. Indeed, Mythos is the story of how we understand our world and explain it to each other through our stories. Of all of the species that exist through the process of evolution, we are not the only species to use tools, feel, or communicate through language. But we are the story-telling species.

In seeking the common threads and themes of these myths and stories-- for example, the creation myths of Bablylon, Rome, the Norse and Native American cultures-- we can see the ideas about ourselves in relation to the universe that bind us together. As we think about how people reacted in certain stories-- the citizens of Troy upon finding a gift-horse outside their gates-- we can think about different ways to act. For example, should those citizens have thought of that big wooden horse as something to light the night sky with, instead of greedily bringing it into their city to be "theirs" as permanent booty?

C.
I think"Arabesque" would be a perfect theme. It connotes an artistic form, a classical ballet pose, as well as all things Arabian and deserty.
Wikipedia says:

The arabesque is an elaborative application of repeating geometric
forms that often echo the forms of plants and animals. Arabesques are
an element of Islamic art usually found decorating the walls of
mosques. The choice of which geometric forms are to be used and how
they are to be formatted is based upon the Islamic view of the world.
To Muslims, these forms, taken together, constitute an infinite
pattern that extends beyond the visible material world. To many in the
Islamic world, they in fact symbolize the infinite, and therefore
uncentralized, nature of the creation of the one God (Allah).
Furthermore, the Islamic Arabesque artist conveys a definite
spirituality without the iconography of Christian art.

Seems like an appropriate burn theme

E11 MMIX, Mixed Up…in terms of evolution, in terms of ideas, with a tie in to the roman numerals, with a Romanesque tone. A little more about this theme idea. Sometimes evolutionary paths get a little MMIXed up. Evolution is a creative process - sometimes resulting in the unexpected. Keeping in mind, evolution is change and transformation - take what was and MMIX it up into what is... MMIX is also the Roman numerals for the year 2009 and give the Theme an underlying Romanesque-ness - the rest is up to you. Mix and Match Myths - put on a zebra-striped toga. Wear a business suit and jump in the mud - get creative and MMIX it up!

The Menagerie, encompasses humans and animals, from domestication of animals to traveling exotic animal collections to royal animal collections, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menagerie.

H.

..futuristic city might be fun for e-11. What do we evolve into? What is your vision of who we will be and how we will live?  Where we are now.

I.

Ch..ch..ch...changes. Turn and face the strange changes... we could have a theme song even.

Evolution, so art projects for the big burn can be tested and so people do not have to create two projects in such a short period of time.

Y.

P-Soup, the primordial soup, touches on the earliest theoretical instances of evolution, pre-evolution. So many choices, so many simple variances, and yet all species in the same warm mixture of life giving fluid.

E11 2009 Theme
Wednesday, 21 January 2009
Ok…it may seem early, but we are thinking THEME for E11 2009. At the last community meeting we did hear a few great ideas and I will share them with you now to inspire you, get your art juices flowing, or perhaps one of these themes just seems to hit the spot for you.

Please look over these themes and if you have an idea, send it to me with a brief explanation within two weeks, so we can start voting and have the theme decided by our next community meeting.

Here are some ideas we discussed at the last meeting:

1.    Gaia….not elaborated on too much, but see here for more info, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_(mythology)

3.    Mother Goose, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Goose

5.    The Menagerie, encompasses humans and animals, from domestication of animals to traveling exotic animal collections to royal animal collections, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menagerie.
